ABUJA- The Nigerian Police Force, on
    Wednesday, arraigned Senator Dino Melaye
before an Abuja High Court sitting in Apo over
allegation that he attempted to kill himself by
jumping out of a vehicle conveying him to
    Lokoja to face criminal trial.
Melaye was in the charge that was endorsed by
the Inspector General of Police, alleged to have
escaped from custody, after he broke the glass
on the second window of a bus belonging to the
    Police, using his left elbow.
The lawmaker was said to have jumped into a
White Toyota Hilux with registration number
    Kaduna MKA 603GY.
According to the Police, his action amounted to
an offence punishable under section 327 of the
    Penal Code Law.
Meanwhile, Melaye who was among 14 Senators
that decamped from the ruling All Progressive
Congress, APC, into the opposition Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday, pleaded not
guilty to the six-count charge police entered
against him, even as his lawyer, Chief Mike
Ozekhome, SAN, applied for his release on bail
    pending trial.
Ozekhome who drew attention of the court to
the fact that his client was previously granted
bail on the same charge by an Abuja Chief
Magistrate Court, said the lawmaker would be
    available to face his trial.
The bail application was not opposed by Police
lawyer, Dr. Alex Iziyon, SAN, who left the issue
to the discretion of the court.
Consequently, trial Justice Slyvanus Oriji who
sat as a vacation judge, granted the defendant
bail to the tune of N5million with two sureties in
    like sum.
The court stressed that one of the sureties must
be a Director in the Federal Civil Service who is
    resident in Abuja.
Justice Oriji who also ordered the surties to
depose an affidavit of means, said Melaye
should be remanded in prison custody in the
event that he failed to meet the bail conditions.
It will be recalled that Police had on May 2,
docked Melaye who is representing Kogi West
Senatorial District, before a Chief Magistrate
Court in Abuja, after he was brought before the
    court on a stretcher.
Though he was granted bail to the tune of
N90m, the matter was subsequently struck out.
Meantime, some of the counts in the fresh
charge Police lodged against him over before
the high court, read: “That you Senator Dino
