Ado-Ekiti- The Ekiti State Coordinator of the
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Mrs.
Emmanuella Okpongete has made a passionate
appeal to host communities on the need to treat
corps members as their own wards.
She pointed out that the scheme has helped in
peaceful co-existence among youth in the
country, adding that the issue of ethnicity and
tribalism have been reduced through the NYSC
scheme.
The state coordinator stated this on Thursday
while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of
the 1,734 corps members deployed to the state
for the 2018 Batch B Orientation course at the
Permanent Orientation camp, Ise-Orun/ Emure
local government area of the state.
Mrs. Okpongete disclosed that the Orientation
course became necessary for the corps
members to be able to understand the
objectives of the scheme and equip them with
the required skills that would prepare them to
face the challenges of the service year and the
years ahead.
“You would agree with me that the NYSC
scheme is the singular institution in this country
of ours that has done so much to curb the
menace of ethnicity,sectionalism and tribalism.
“For this reason, we plead with our host
communities to please see and treat the corps
members as one of their own. We plead with
you to protect these vulnerable Nigerians who
have come from far and near to serve in Ekiti
state.”
Speaking at the ceremony, the state governor,
Mr. Ayodele Fayose noted that the scheme has
impacted positively on the psyche of Nigerians
and had contributed immensely to the
development of the rural areas through various
community development projects embarked
upon by successive corps members.
Represented by the commissioner for
Information, Hon.Lanre Ogunsuyi, Fayose
admonished corps members deployed to the
state to see the call to national service as a call
to sacrifice, dedication perseverance and
humility.
” Ekiti Government places high premium on the
youth, therefore the corps members deployed to
Ekiti state will be engaged to drive agricultural
development in the state. These will turn the
indices of unemployment in the land.
” In the absence of white collar jobs, you are
encouraged to go into agriculture businesses of
farming, fishing, snairy and others. Ekiti state is
rich in farmland, I enjoined you to embark on
mechanized farming,” the governor advised.
Fayose promised to the government’s continued
support to the scheme in the state especially in
the areas of provision of more infrastructures in
the camp for it to be more conducive.
