Senate rescinds confirmation of INEC commissioner over petition

Post by Kingseyi on Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:23 pm

- Senator Albert Bassey raises point of order regarding the confirmation of Monday Tom as a Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)- The lawmaker states that a petition was sent to the Senate committee on ethics, privileges and public petition regarding Tom- Mufutau Gbadamosi, the Olofa of Offa says his people will not be party to any attempt to ridicule Bukola SarakiThe confirmation of Monday Tom (Akwa Ibom)as a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been rescinded by the Nigerian Senate.Premium Times reports that Tom and three other nominees were confirmed by the Senate as INEC commissioners on Wednesday, June 6, after adopting a report from its committee on INEC.But the upper house rescinded the confirmation sequel to a point of order raised by Albert Bassey (PDP, Akwa Ibom northeast).
“I wish to draw the attention of the committee on INEC headed by Senator Nazif, to the fact that I and the committee had received a petition against this nominee which was received on the 5th of February 2018 and the report of the committee that was laid before the Senate did not take cognisance of the fact that there is a petition against the nominee.“I have with me, the report of that committee on page 5. There is no reference, whatsoever to the petition,”Bassey said. The senator noted that the same petition was sent to the committee on ethics, privileges and public petition.“I therefore wish to seek the authority of this chamber and of the senate president that the confirmation of the nominee from Akwa Ibom be stepped down and sent to the committee for proper work and maybe, thereafter, submitted back to the Senate,” he said, adding that he was not against the nominee.“We wanted the committee on INEC to finish their own report before we juxtapose what theyhave done with our own report. So we have notsent in our own report yet."
After Bassey’s argument, the Senate unanimously agreed to rescind Tom’s confirmation as the Senate president refered the petition to the committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions to report back in2 weeks.Meanwhile, the Olofa of Offa, Mufutau Gbadamosi, has stated that his people will not be part of any plotto embarrass or ridicule Senate president Bukola Saraki. His comment was conveyed in a statement released by his principal private secretary, Tajudeen Oloyede, on Wednesday, June 6.
the Senate president had been invited for questioning by the Nigerian Police Force, following a robbery which took place on April 5, during which 33 persons were killed. However, the royal father asked the Police to refrain from unnecessary sensationalism in handling the investigation into the robbery incident.
